What is a Root Canal Procedure?

A root canal procedure is a dental treatment designed to save a tooth that’s severely decayed, infected, or damaged, by removing the affected pulp from inside the tooth. A root canal session usually lasts about 60 to 90 minutes so dentists can clean, disinfect, and fill the root canal to seal the space.

If you’re dealing with significant tooth pain, sensitivity, or infection,it’s advisable to consult a dentist, who may recommend a root canal treatment for relief. This procedure not only alleviates pain and eliminates infection but also preserves your natural tooth, so you can avoid the need for extraction.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal Procedure

Inside every tooth is a small space called the root canal. This area contains dental pulp which consists of nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes damaged or infected, it can cause severe pain and lead to further complications if left untreated.

Several conditions can lead to irreversible damage to the dental pulp:

Tooth decay

Caused by bacterial infection due to poor oral hygiene, sugary diet, or other factors. Tooth decay penetrates the tooth enamel and dentin, eventually reaching the pulp and causing inflammation or infection.

Deep fillings

Sometimes fillings or other forms of dental restorations are made too close to the pulp, resulting in bacterial leakage which can irritate or infect the pulp. In some cases it may even lead to inflammation or pulp necrosis.

Trauma

Physical injury to the tooth from accidents, sports, or other impact can cause trauma. The force of the trauma can damage blood vessels and nerves within the pulp.

Tooth fracture

Sometimes biting on hard objects or sustaining an injury can cause teeth to break or crack or fracture.  A fracture that extends to the pulp can expose it to bacteria and contaminants, causing infection from within.

Infection

As mentioned above, infection can be caused by a number of events: Bacterial invasion due to decay, periodontal disease, or cracks in the tooth. You know you probably have an infected tooth when you’re experiencing severe pain.

In the past, these problems called for immediate tooth extraction. Today, our modern approach to dental treatment provides more options. Our dentists at Smile Place Dental can offer you root canal treatment to save your natural teeth.

What Happens During a Root Canal Procedure

The process of a root canal procedure can seem complex, but essentially the treatment is broken down into four key steps:

1. Diagnosis and Preparation

The dentist begins by examining your tooth with an X-ray in order to understand the issue before administering local anaesthesia to numb the area, ensuring a pain-free procedure.

2. Pulp Removal

A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the root canal area and remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue using dental instruments. The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped using specialised instruments.

3. Filling the Canals

After the canal is cleaned and shaped, it is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the space and prevent reinfection. This temporary filling will be removed later on by your dentist before the tooth is restored.

4. Permanent Restoration

A final visit is needed so your dentist can restore the tooth with a permanent filling or crown to restore its function and appearance. Follow-up visits are encouraged, to ensure proper healing.
